Tom
Duckett - NS71
Tom
started racing at the end of 2003 with a Vauxhall Nova in Class
2 after being introduced to the sport through Steve Moreton, his
employer at the time. Steve had raced for many years during the
80's and 90's.
The
car was entirely self built as was the engine and the 2004 season
was a steep learning curve for Tom. He raced at the MAP Open and
had two thirds and a fourth which unfortunatley wasn't enough to
make the final. With his first taste of National racing, Tom was
hooked and planned to build a new car for 2005, making some changes
along the way.
With
Tom only living around the corner from John and both of them regularly
attending local race meetings, they quickly became friends and Tom
set about building his new shell in John's workshop at the end of
2004 - this was when JD Motorsport started out using Tom and John's
new cars for 2005 as the adverts!
Tom
put a lot of time into the new car over the winter time using new
ideas picked up from his travels the year before. He used the same
engine from the year before with some alterations and a rolling
road session.
He
joined the BAS for the 2005 season but was unfortunate to suffer
problems during the early part of the year, although at MAP, he
had a second and two thirds which left him just one place short
of his first final at National level. Tom made some further improvements
to the car during the year but unfortunatley the engine gave up
at STAR's penultimate meeting. Tom had kept his old shell built
for Steve to race at club meetings, so he borrowed it back for the
last BAS meeting where he finished with a second, third and fourth.
Again - not quite enough for the final.
At
STAR's final meeting of the year, Tom won his first class points
title in his old car but ended up being rolled to end the year off!
He
intends to build a new shell and engine for the 2006 Class 2 campaign.
